What percentage does the assistant surgeon get reimbursed on a surgery?

By definition, AS is only reported when the surgical assistant is a Physician Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner, or Clinical Nurse Specialist services. But you should note that different payers may have different payment levels. For instance the BC Premara product only reimburses 10% of the allowable. Also most payers want to see only the AS modifier for these types of providers (and some also require a description of the work performed in the operative note), but some also require the modifier -80 to be used in conjunction with AS so it is always best to check with your payers before billing.

So for Physician's assisting surgery we should be using modifier 80 AND for NP's or PA's we should be using "AS"?

Medicare pays 16% of the allowable to physicians who assist at surgery (80 or 82 modifier), but only 14% for PAs or NPs doing it (AS modifier).
