Hi Melanie, i came across and read questions in the forum pertaining to laminaria placement. Just a quick question, with multiple laminaria placements in one session, am i correct that we bill only CPT 59200 ONCE no matter how many are inserted during the procedure. It will be a different scenario when the placement was done during the same day at different times and if i am right remembering your comment that it would depend on the time difference in the insertion and with the documentation supporting its medical necessity if we are considering a repeat procedure. Can we bill the supply code for laminarias in multiple units depending on the number that has been placed? Thanks. Very respectfully, Gracie

You are correct. Bill only 59200 no matter how many inserted at the same session. And yes, there must be good documentation of a separate session in applying it and it will not be paid when performed within the 24 hours prior to delivery as induction is otherwise included in the payment for the labor management/delivery process under CPT and ACOG guidelines. 59200, per the RBRVS database information, includes the use of up to 3 laminaria tents so you could not bill for that separately and of course in the hospital setting, the physician will not be supplying them. Also keep in mind that per the CPT knowledge base 59200 can be reported for the use of any cervical dilator, including a Foley catheter.
