Hello Melanie,

I was hoping you could elaborate on the correct use of these two codes.

We, as coders, from my research, seem to be all over the map on the correct use of these codes

I know I am making this harder than it is...and way over thinking this.

O99.89 (other specified diseases and conditions complicating pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium)

O26.89x (other specified pregnancy related conditions)

Pregnant patient with possible flu. Headache, congestion, fever, etc ?

O26.89x to me this is not related to the pregnancy other than the mom is sick. Which then makes it related, as it making the mom sick.

O99.89 Or is a disease or condition complicating the pregnancy because the mom is sick with the flu.

And around and around I go.

Thanks for any clarification you can give me on these two codes.

Maria

O99.89 means that the patient has a condition that she could get even if she was not pregnant - like cold, flu, congestion and there is no other more specific code that lists what that condition is.
O26.89 means the condition she has (which does not have its own specific code) would only have occurred because she was pregnant.

But you need to be careful here - a headache could be a sign of pre-eclampsia so would be related to pregnancy. The provider needs to be the one determining which code applies.
