Good Morning to everyone!!

I have a few questions about observation and their codes...

1. Does observation stop after 23 hours? Our billing service seems to think that it does, however I have to bill however the hospital billed. If the patient is in for 3 days and the hospital bills it as observation, then so do I...I can't just make them inpatient because it's over 23 hours.
2. If our doctor does a consult on the first day and a subsequent visit the second day, what codes should I be using for that subsequent day?

I have been billing these for years and now all of sudden my billing service seems to think I'm doing it wrong. I would love any input you guys could offer me!!

They are making me think I'm losing my mind!!

Thanks in advance!!

Wow!! I certainly didn't know we could be billing more than 1 visit on the 2nd day....I really appreciate everyone's help. It's so nice to get the reassurance when you need it!!

and the OBS time is normally determined by the hospital with the level of care, obs is obviously a lower level

Thanks Tara!!
Those are the codes (99211-99215 ) for observation that I have been using, but my billing service was telling me I was wrong using them...Of course, they couldn't come up with different codes to use and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to crazy!!
