our physician was doing a section while another patient delivered vaginally. our physician was not there at all for the 2nd patient's delivery. the resident did the delivery but another attending (not part of our coverage arrangement) was there to help out. the other attending wrote a note in the patient's chart concerning the delivery.
Who bills for the delivery?? i'm confused about this one since our doctor was in house but was otherwise engaged.
any help would be greatly appreciated. and for the record, i greatly appreciate the help that i get from this website and i find that i receive quality answers to my questions.

He had to be attending the delivery to bill for it- the other guy will bill
the delivery, yours will bill out antepartum and postpartum care.

In that case the physician who did the delivery get to bill the delivery an=
d your physician gets to bill for all the other care.

In that case, I would bill a delivery only in the name of the physician that
was personally present during the delivery and bill the antepartum and
postpartum separately.

the physician who was at the delivery is not part of our group and is not
related to our group in any way. the physician at the delivery was just doing us
a favor.

Annie,
the physician with the resident is the attending on record for the
delivery.

It is my understanding that because you are all part of the same group,
he would be considered a "covering" physician for the c-section doc.

Most groups have policies in place to bill for these situations, doc a
bills the global, but doc b gets the "credit" for the delivery type
situation. We have situations like this frequently.

Unless it is a carrier that requires unbundling of the care
(delivery/antenatal), we would use the provider that was her primary OB.
If the unbundle is required, we would bill the actual delivering
physician for the delivery, and the primary OB for the antepartum care.
Hope this helps.
