Hello Melanie,

I found a list of Controlled Substance Drugs under the DEA. The list has Schedule 1, 11, 111, IV, V Drugs. Some are considered narcotics and some are not. If the drug is on the list and is not a narcotic, is it still considered a controlled substance? (like Ativan). Please see list that is attached. I am trying to understand how to read this list in determining which drug is a controlled substance for the table of risk if it is administered as an IV or IM

The DEA’s drug schedule organizes drugs into groups based on risk of abuse or harm. Those drugs with high risk and no counterbalancing benefit are banned from medical practice and are Schedule I drugs. Conversely, those considered to have the lowest risk would be in Schedule V (5). Ativan, which is a Schedule IV drug, can lead to abuse and addiction/dependency, but less than those of Schedules 1, 2 and 3. A drug does not have to be a narcotic to make the list, only have the potential for addiction, abuse or dependency. Based on this list if the drug is administered IV or IM it certainly can be considered a "parenteral controlled substance." However the risk table is not the only criteria for MDM and if this is the only element and the patient is under control otherwise, you will have a hard time getting to a level 5 service with high complexity of the medical decision making.
